Organic & Chemical-Free Certifications

You may hear about organic, chemical-free certifications for our mattresses, but what do these designations actually mean? We break down the common certifications our mattresses have.

If a mattress carries a Global Organic Latex Standard seal, it means it has passed the standard for organic latex and finished latex foam. A mattress carrying this designation guarantees there are no synthetic materials in the finished product, only 100% latex from a rubber tree. The certification also designates that the tree itself is organic (i.e., no pesticides have been applied over the past 3 years). Our manufacturers Organicpedic, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic all carry this certification.

The Greengaurd seal is designed to help consumers identify products that have low chemical emissions, protecting indoor air quality. To test emissions, Greenguard places products in a vacuum chamber to encourage products to leech off gasses. In order to be Greenguard certified, a product must be tested to ensure the product emits chemicals at a rate less than 1/100th of established safe levels. These levels are determined by the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission. Our manufacturers Organicpedic, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic all carry the Greenguard seal.

USDA Organic

In order to achieve this certification, manufacturers must meet specific requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In general, the burden of proof is on the organic operation to establish that their products use only approved substances, protect natural resources, and conserve biodiversity.

In order to be certified as USDA Organic, a product must contain:
NO synthetic pesticides
NO synthetic fertilizers
NO genetically modified organisms
NO carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic chemicals
NO endocrine disruptors
NO non-biodegradable detergents, degreasers, or surfactants
NO chlorine bleach
NO plastisols
NO other synthetic chemicals

Global Organic Textile Standard

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is one of the world’s foremost processing standards for textiles made from organic materials. It requires adherence to strict environmental compliance regulations, as well as social criteria (i.e., humane business practices).

Confidence in Textiles

The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, with its product label “Confidence in Textiles,” is a well-known independent certification that tests textiles for harmful substances. The Sustainable Textile Production (STeP) certification identifies companies who comply with environmentally friendly and socially responsible business practices, while the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100plus certification designates companies who pass scrutiny for both harmful substance testing and ethical business practices.

CertiPUR-US® Program

The CertiPUR-US® mark carries the assurance that the foam in your mattress has been certified by a third party to meet criteria related to indoor emissions, physical performance, and environmental stewardship. This is not an organic certification, rather one that applies to soy-based polyurethane products like out memory foam mattresses. This certification states these products contain no ozone depleters, no PBDEs, no heavy metals, no formaldehyde, no phthalates, and low VOCs. Our WorldBed Studio and Dallas Natural Mattress Direct products carry this designation.

Consumer Product Safety Commission

The CPSC protects the public from risk of serious injury or death from thousands of types of product sources under its jurisdiction, including those that pose a hazard from fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical sources.

NSF International, the global testing and certification organization, along with, are joint forces to promote and implement CarbonFree Products Program.

Certified Humane

The Certified Humane Raised and Handled® label signifies that animal products come from facilities that maintain high standards for animal treatment. Organicpedic, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic all carry the Certified Humane certification.

Green America

Green America promotes social justice and environmental sustainability through helping people and businesses connect through the marketplace. Businesses that earn their Green Business Certification can display this seal.

Eco Institut

The UL ECO-INSTITUT rigorously tests floor coverings, mattresses, furniture, and bedding for pollutants and emissions. Carrying this label asserts that the manufacturer is dedicated to low-emission products.

Oregon Tilth Certified Organic

Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO) certifies producers adhere to strict standards applicable to onsite inspections and legally binding contracts, in order to protect consumers of organic products. Our manufacturers Organicpedic, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic all carry the OTCO certification.
